    On Feb. 18, , the County of Los Angeles was established as one of the 27 original counties, several months before California was admitted to the Union. The people of Los Angeles County on April 1, asserted their newly won right of self-government and elected a three-man Court of Sessions as their first governing body.   The Sonoma County Historical Records Commission promotes the preservation of historical records in and about Sonoma County, California. It consists of voting members drawn from county government, county library services, academics, community history, and business and genealogical research fields.

    In California’s early history it was relatively easy to create a new county. You simply had to convince the state Legislature. As a result, to the original 27 counties, 33 more were added, one of which (Klamath) died and one of which (Pautah) was never in California.
